Welcome to the Brockton Montana Picture Tour

One of our favorite “Hi-Line” memories is driving all night along Highway Two with the radio playing 88.1 FM KGVA. from Fort Belknap, Montana.  The combination of cold air rushing in from the open windows and the rhythmic drum beats made staying awake early in the morning a joy. As I past by the small towns in Northeast Montana it occurred to me that I knew more about the towns in Italy than I did about the towns located a mere 400 miles Northeast from my home in Helena, Montana.  Join us, as we ride the length of Highway 2 from Baineville in the east to Troy, Montana in the west and explore the “Hi-Line” towns that make up the great state of Montana.

Fort Peck Reservation

Brockton, Montana is one of eight Montana communities located in the Fort Peck Indian Reservation the ninth-largest Indian reservation in the United States. The Reservation is 110 miles (180 km) long and 40 miles (64 km) wide, encompassing 209,331 acres. The reservation is large but Brockton’s population size is small, the 2010 census reported 255 people call Brockton home.  The eight Montana communities are: Brockton (pop. 255), Frazer (pop. 452), Lustre (pop. ?), Poplar (pop. 810) , Reserve (pop. 37), Wolf Point (pop. 2,621 ), Fort Kipp (pop. ?),  Oswego (pop. 40).

Two separate American Indian Nations

The Fort Peck Reservation is home to two separate American Indian Nations, the Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes, each composed of numerous bands and divisions. The Sioux divisions of Sisseton/Wahpetons, the Yanktonais, and the Teton Hunkpapa are all represented. The Assiniboine bands of Canoe Paddler and Red Bottom are represented.
