Welcome to the Augusta Montana Picture Tour
One of our all time favorite Montana intersections is located in Augusta, Montana. it’s the intersection of the “Stearns-Augusta Road” (County Road 435) and Willow Creek Road.”
No matter what direction you choose to travel it’s a GREAT choice for seeing some spectacular country. To the west of Augusta is the Willow Creek Reservoir, the Sun River Management Area, one of the largest herds of Big Horn Sheep in the country, Gibson Dam and the gateway to the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. The list goes on and on. For now, let’s turn right on Highway 287 and explore downtown Augusta, Montana.
Follow The Old North Trail
We assembled Bluebird Sunny Day pictures shot in 2003, ’07 ’09 and 2020 to show a Winter drive North from Wolf Creek to August, Montana via Highway 434 and the Stearns Road. Highway 434 will take you from Wolf Creek, Montana up through a tree covered creek bottom to Dearborn, Montana. Dearborn began as a Stage Station in the 1860’s to provide overnight accomodations for wagan passengers traveling from Fort Benton to Helena. After crossing over Highway 200 you jump on the Stearns Road and ride parallel to the “Old North Trail” along the Rocky Mountain Front. The 10,000 year old “Old North Trail” a.k.a. the “Travois Trail” was used by Native Americans to traverse south from present day Canada to Central America. You will be riding on windswept gravel road and over a narrow bridge so drive slow and soak in the breathtaking landscape. Along the way take a minute to visit the unique Stearns barn built in 1911. The building included a Basketball court and a Stage for social gatherings. After the community of Stearns, Montana faded away in the 1930’s the barn was used for dances and housing for road construction crews working on Highway 200 west over Rogers Pass.
