Welcome to the Beckman Wildlife Management Area Picture Tour

We stumbled across a Montana Jewel call the Beckman Wildlife Management Area between Lewistown and Denton Montana on the Judith River. There are 23 Wildlife Management Areas in the state of Montana and they always attract our attention when we are looking for beautiful remote Montana locations to photograph.

We can thank Mule Deer hunter and Denton, Montana native,  Leroy “R.B.” Beckman, for making this piece of incredible country accessible to all Montanans. When Beckman died in 1997, at age 88. He left nearly $3 million for the acquisition of deer habitat along the Judith River. The Missouri breaks-like habitat found in the Beckman WMA, with the sandstone rimrock and ponderosa pine, is classic mule deer habitat.  It also home to whitetail deer, pheasants, turkeys, and sharp-tailed grouse.

If you need a memorable break, pop a tent in the Beckman WMA designated camping area. Watch the sunset (picture below) as the Nighthawks swoop and the Meadowlark sing. In the morning walk through fields of Yucca (picture below) as you spook deer from their hiding places among the rimrock and ponderosa pine. Continue on through the old barley, wheat, and alfalfa fields to the remains of an homestead near the banks of the Judith River. Once you reach the Judith River don’t forget to look up and say; “Thank you Mr. Beckman for this wonderful gift.”
