Welcome To the Virginia City MT Picture Tour

Didn’t have time to see all the buildings and exhibits in Virginia City & Nevada City, Montana? Don’t worry, we photographed the two popular towns during the months of June and early August. Now you can make a list of things to see and do next time you come to town.

WHY VISIT VirGINiA City?

The three Montana towns of Virginia City, Bannack and Fort Benton, Montana beautifully explain the early history of the state of Montana and represent the true and original Old West.  Located 90 miles from Yellowstone National Park, Virginia City offers visitors the chance to experience a Victorian era Gold Mining Town.  Thanks to dedicated preservation efforts you feel as if time had stood still as you walk among the landmarks. While in town, you can rub elbows with knowledgeable guides dressed in authentic historic period dress and learn about panning for gold, blacksmith work and so much more.

Listen To The Music Hall

Our favorite Virginia City & Nevada City memory is the background music.  Virginia City & Nevada City are one of the few remaining locations where you can hear “antique sounds” from the incredible “Music Machines” located in the Virginia City and Nevada City Music Halls.

The Preservation History of Virginia City AND Nevada City Montana

If you love Virginia City be sure to thank Charles A Bovey (1907-1978).  Bovey poured millions of his own money into the acquisition and relocation of Montana historic buildings from across the state.  He is responsible for saving the landmarks in Virginia City and moving over 100 buildings to Nevada City.  After restoring the historic buildings he filled them with antiques.  For instance, Bovey purchased almost the entire inventory of the B.A.B. Organ Company to make the Nevada City Music Hall the largest public collection of automated music machines in North America.  After Bovey and his wife, Rachel Sue Ford, died all the buildings were sold to the State of Montana in 1997.
